Space Shuttle Discovery

Just wanted to share a couple of pictures of the night launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery. The night launch is so amazing because it lights up everything for miles and miles and you can see the shuttle for a long time. These are taken from my front yard, so there are some trees in the way for the first few seconds. It launched at 11:59 pm, so that gives you an idea of how lit up the area was! I have lived close to the space center for only two years, so this is just incredible to me!

Beautiful. I had the pleasure of seeing a shuttle launch, by accident, in 1988. We were on our way into Disney World and we noticed everyone pulled over on the shoulder of the road. Then we realized it was a shuttle launch. You could see it pretty good from that distance.

Oh wow that's close!! How often do they take off? I think I'd be too scared to watch, I'm bad enough with planes going overhead! Are there loud noises too from where you live?

Sarah: They take off every couple of months. You also hear it at launch, but the loudest is when it reenters the atmosphere as it is landing... it is a VERY loud sonic boom! The first time I heard it I thought someone drove into my garage because of the noise!

How amazing! I had a good laugh about the garage. Poor you!! I'm not sure how I would cope with it, it must take years off you with such frights.

Hi! Popping over from SITS Roll Call to visit.

Wow, that's amazing. Worth staying up for. I'll bet when the night is clear you can see the shuttle perfect too!

That seems very bright for night, must be cool to see that in person :) My Mom lives in FLA, middle gulf side, and she just returned from the space center with some neat stuff for our son, space is always cool no matter what our age isn't it? Stopping by from SITS to say hello!

I was actually in FL visiting with my parents, but I did NOT get up to watch it because there had been so many scrubs and I know that with a baby who still wakes up once or twice a night, if I had stayed up that long and they scrubbed again, I would have been mad enough to spit:-)a

That is so cool! Is it LOUD? We're planning a trip to the space center for the first time next June.

Happy SITS day from a fellow homeschooling mom. :-)

That is so cool! When it launches can you hear it taking off as well? I bet it's awesome to see it during the day as well. I didn't realize they did night launches so late. But for us night owls, midnight is nothing!
